If you watched Star Trek: Discovery and wanted more Mirror Universe shenanigans, you’re in luck.
Succession #1 is the latest Star Trek comic offering from IDW, written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer with art by Angel Hernandez. The comic takes place entirely in the Mirror Universe introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season one, shortly after the events of the TV series.
The setting in and of itself is exciting — because it’s after the TV show characters leave, Succession is free to spin its own tale and not worry about running into issues with what’s canon, or accidentally killing off a character who turns out to be important. And, based on the first issue, it looks like Succession is going to have fun with that freedom.
Succession takes us into the Mirrorverse to see what happens next to the Terran Empire after Emperor Georgiou’s ship is destroyed. Her cousin Alexander has taken her place as Emperor, and has a madcap villain personality about him. Emperor Alexander thinks making humans the superior species to rule the galaxy isn’t enough, and wants to actually make humans the ONLY species in the galaxy. He’s working to create a biological weapon that will wipe out everyone from the Klingons to the Vulcan.
Speaking of which, there is a group of rebels plotting against him, which include Amanda Grayson and L’Rell. Their cameos are small in this issue, but show us that familiar faces are roaming this galaxy too — we even see Harry Mudd, who has changed from con-man to a friendly face in the Mirrorverse.
The biggest change in the issue is the reveal that Michael Burnham is still alive after all. Everyone believed her and Lorca both to be dead, but it looks like neither was true — Lorca of course survived by escaping the prime timeline on Discovery (the show), and now Burnham has cheated death too.
But how did Burnham survive, and what is she up to? I guess those are questions for issue #2. She and Lroca had been planning to stage a coup, and that might still be in the cards, but if Burnham wants to take down Emperor Alexander she needs to get in line: the rebellion is working against him, and so is his number two in command Katrina Cornwell.
Succession is a four-issue miniseries so I expect the story to move pretty quickly. Issue #1 brought us back into the world of Discovery‘s Mirrorverse, but we still don’t know where exactly the story is going to take us.
