Cold Feet Pilot (1997)
Things kicked off with the pilot, probably most well known for the scene where James Nesbitt’s Adam tried to win the heart of Helen Baxendale’s Rachel by serenading her naked in the street with a rose poised between his bum cheeks. The story saw Adam bump into Rachel’s car in a supermarket car park, leading to a series of dates after they swap numbers for insurance purposes.
After Adam gets ‘cold feet‘, they split up and she returns to her old boyfriend before he realises his mistake and woos her back. The pilot also introduced audiences to Adam’s friends Pete and Jenny Gifford (John Thomson and Fay Ripley) as they try for their first baby, and Rachel’s posh friends Karen and David Marsden (Robert Bathurst and Hermione Norris) arguing over the choice of nanny for their son, Josh.
Cold Feet Series 1 (1998)
Picking up nine months later, Jenny has a baby, which Pete misses while playing golf. The baby is named Adam after he stays with her through the birth. The series follows their adjustment to parenthood. Karen and David face a rockier path after he tries to seduce their nanny Romana, Karen falls for writer Alec Welch when she returns to work as a publisher and David’s investments in a South African gold course fail.
Meanwhile, Adam and Rachel’s attempts to move in together falter when her ‘husband’ Kris is revealed. The series ends with Rachel pregnant by Adam or Kris and heading off to London, despite Adam’s proposal of marriage.
Cold Feet Series 2 (1999)
Having problems in their marriage, Pete makes things worse by having an affair with Amy – after she is dumped by Adam. Rachel returns after an abortion and her and Adam circle each other as they try new relationships, before he discovers he has testicular cancer, which leads to them reuniting. David loses his job, Karen falls pregnant and Pete and Jenny finally break up after an attempt at reconciliation.
Cold Feet Series 3 (2000)
Pete and Jenny remain separated and she begins to date one of Karen’s colleagues Robert. As Pete starts to date a teacher Emma, the ball starts rolling on their divorce. After trying to get pregnant and failing – partially the result of her abortion – Adam and Rachel finally get engaged and marry at the end of the series. David starts to have an affair with local activist Jessica after Karen gives birth to twins.
Over the course of the series, everyone learns about the affair except Karen, who is told by David at Adam and Rachel’s wedding. The series ends with them apparently splitting up while Pete and Jenny finally reunite.
Cold Feet Series 4 (2001)
Despite their reconciliation, Pete and Jenny’s marriage falls apart again as she miscarries. She gets a job as a personal assistant in New York and leaves, marking Fay Ripley’s departure from the show. Instead, Pete meets and falls in love with Rachel’s Australian friend Jo Ellison (Kimberley Joseph). They eventually marry in Australia during the Sydney-based finale. Adam and Rachel decide to adopt, though the appearance of his ex-girlfriend Jane causes sparks.
They almost adopt Laura but things change when Rachel falls pregnant. Karen kicks David home, starts drinking heavily, and starts seeing Mark (Sean Pertwee), leading to an explosive conflict between him and David. Rachel has an emergency Caesarian and her and Adam’s son Matthew is born.
Cold Feet Series 5 (2003)
Karen and David go through an amicable divorce and he starts to fall for his lawyer Robyn, while Mark and Karen’s relationship ends. Pete and Jo’s marriage goes through a rocky patch and she has an affair. They end up getting a divorce and she heads back to Australia. Rachel and Adam adjust to their life as parents. Adam wins them their dream house in an auction, but their joy is cut tragically short as Rachel is critically injured in a car crash and dies.
Her funeral sees Jenny return from the US, heavily pregnant and reunite with Pete, while Adam and his son Matthew leaves Manchester forever…
Cold Feet Series 6 (2016)
The show returned for a surprise new series last year. Adam came to Manchester from his job in Hong Kong to marry his colleague and daughter of a millionaire business tycoon, Angela (Karen David). Realising his son Matthew (Ceallach Spellman) is struggling in boarding school. Adam stays behind and his short lived marriage doesn’t survive. But he soon has a connection with Rachel-lookalike landlady Tina (Leanne Best) and after lots of flirtation they finally get together.
Jenny and Pete struggle through his financial problems and he suffers with depression, almost committing suicide at one point, while the return of Chloe’s real father Grant (Robert Webb) creates problems when she learns that Pete isn’t her dad. Karen starts a relationship with Angela’s millionaire father Eddie (Art Malik) and David finds himself suspended from work for financial fraud and nearly faces jail time, while his marriage to Robyn ends.
