It was so popular last year that we decided to do it again! Join us this holiday season as we introduce you to twelve of our favourite podcasts in the 12 Days of Podmas.
Aaron Mahnke has become a well known name when it comes to podcasts ever since he started Lore, a documentary style podcast that looks into myths, legends, folklore and history. Lore is a podcast that has won multiple awards, has been adapted into a television show, and led to Mahnke forming a podcasting company called Grime and Mild Entertainment, and the hit shows have kept on coming. Cabinet of Curiosities, 13 Days of Halloween and Bridgewater have all been popular hits.
The latest offering from Mahnke, which features the man himself presenting each week, is called That’s Just Weird with Aaron Mahnke. It is a shorter bite sized show that averages around twenty or so minutes and the focus is the Weird. Specifically weird events and happenings both from today and in history all over the world. The show opens with Mahnke telling us about recent weird new stories, before looking at past events from the same time of the year.
The show culminates in a deep dive where Mahnke spends more time on one story, usually from the past. A recent one, for instance, which came out around Halloween time was about the creation of Candy Corn sweets and the love-hate relationship it has with Trick or Treaters. Perhaps not a big draw to those of us here in the UK, but there is just something about Mahnke that keeps your attention throughout.

Mahnke’s delivery is perfect, just like how he is in Lore. He has an intimate slower delivery that makes it feel like he is having a conversation with just you and a few close friends. His self-deprecating humour is there as is his quiet intelligence and love for the subject matter. It is genuine and not sensationalism.
That’s Just Weird is a perfect listen when you have a coffee break or a few minutes to yourself. It allows you to step out from your stress and just enjoy learning a few things about our crazy world, without it adding to the misery that news broadcasts seem to be full of these days. Each show also includes links to the stories if you want to read up more for yourself. If you loved Lore or any other of Mahnke’s previous podcasts, or even if you are brand new to him you should definitely give That’s Just Weird a go.
